Durbes Hillfort Nature Trail
GPR 56.589872, 21.364109
This nature trail combines nature and history, leading along the Durbes hillfort and Durbes pond. The Durbes hillfort is a significant site because, in the 13th century, a decisive battle took place here between the combined army of the Livonian Order and the Samogitians, who were joined by the Curonians. This was one of the largest battles in the region, commemorated by the memorial stone on the Durbes hillfort, dedicated to the Samogitian victory over the Crusaders. The stone was brought from Samogitia and placed here on the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Durbes.
At Durbes hillfort, visitors can also explore the ruins of the German Order castle, built in the 14th century. The castle served to protect a vital road leading from Prussia to Livonia. The castle was destroyed 300 years ago, but part of the southern wall still remains. A viewing platform has been constructed on the hillfort, providing stunning views of the Durbes surroundings.
Additionally, visitors should not miss the recently built birdwatching tower on the shore of Durbes Lake (coordinates: Lat: 56.59782; Lon: 21.34384). The tower offers excellent opportunities to observe the surrounding nature and bird habitats. Audio information is also available by scanning a QR code, offering more details about the tower.
This trail offers visitors a wonderful opportunity to combine nature enjoyment with the exploration of Latvian history and culture.
