Ezerskola Sacrificial Stone and Sacrificial Lime Tree

“Ezerskola”, Kalnišķi, Nīcas pagasts

In the past, when the Kursi (one of the Baltic tribes) lived in Kurzeme, shrines and places of worship where energy could be drawn were not enclosed spaces. They were found in nature as sacred forests, groves, trees, mountains, waters and rocks, which were attributed supernatural powers. In the vicinity of Kalniški, at the northern end of Lake Pape, in ancient times, there were several Curonian sanctuaries. Ezerskola's Sacrificial Stone is one of them. It is an ancient place of worship.

The sacrificial stone is flat and is 3 m long, 2.4 m wide and 0.9 m high. Its circumference is 8.6 m. The stone is a special and energy-rich object because it lies at the intersection of the nine adras. It is said that it is the most energetically powerful stone in Kurzeme. There are certain places in the stone where you should stand or lie down to relieve stress or treat various ailments. Currently, the stone is recognized as an archaeological monument of national importance and a place of worship.

In ancient times, when the Curonians (one of the Baltic tribes) lived in Kurzeme, sanctuaries and cult sites, where energy could be gathered, were not enclosed spaces. They were found in nature, such as sacred forests, groves, trees, mountains, waters, and stones, which were attributed with supernatural powers. Around the Kalnišķi area, at the northern end of Lake Pape, several Curonian sanctuaries existed in ancient times. The Ezereskolas Offering Stone is one of them. It is an ancient cult site.

The Offering Stone is flat, measuring 3 meters in length, 2.4 meters in width, and 0.9 meters in height. Its circumference is 8.6 meters. The stone is special and energy-rich because it lies at the intersection of nine energy lines. It is said to be the most energetically powerful stone in Kurzeme. There are known spots on the stone where one should stand or lie down to relieve stress or treat various ailments. The stone is currently recognized as a national archaeological monument and a cult site.

The Offering Stone is located in the former Ezereskolas old manor park area. Legends say that there was also a sacred grove here – another Curonian cult site. In this sacred grove, nine oaks grew, planted in groups of three, forming plantings around the stone. Currently, only five large trees remain from the nine oaks. According to people's stories, new oaks were planted at the missing oak spots. 20 meters from the Offering Stone, to the northeast, there is also the so-called Offering Linden. This is a large linden with a circumference of 5.15 meters.

Today, visitors often leave money on the stone, which is a continuation of our ancestors' tradition of offering.
