Ālande River Recreation Complex
Grobiņa
Recommended starting point: Grobiņa Livonian Order Castle Ruins
During the Curonian era, the Ālande River was an important trade and transportation route. Today, the river has become much smaller, yet it remains a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Since 2019, the Ālande River Walking Trail has been created here, stretching 2.6 km along the river through Grobiņa (one way). Informational stands placed along the trail introduce visitors to the history and events of Grobiņa.
The recommended starting point for the walk is the medieval castle ruins of Grobiņa. While visiting the ruins, be sure to take the opportunity to climb the viewing platform above the open-air stage. The nearby town promenade offers a peaceful view over the Mill Pond, while children can enjoy the slide and playground. You will also certainly meet the pond’s residents — ducks.
Please do not feed birds with bread or other food unsuitable for animals!
Continue your walk to the ancient hillfort of Grobiņa (Skābaržkalns), where both adults and children can enjoy trying the outdoor percussion instruments.
Whether you choose a peaceful walk, historical exploration, or active recreation, the surroundings of the Ālande River are an excellent destination for families with children to enjoy nature, history, and quality time together in the fresh air.
