In autumn and spring, Jūrmalciems is one of the best birdwatching sites on the western coast of Kurzeme. The Jūrmalciems area has a great variety of bird species, as the landscape of dunes and dry grasslands alternates with gardens, farmsteads, and groups of trees. A total of 210 bird species have been observed along the route.

  1. Coastal dune and Piestātne pier. During migration in autumn and spring, it is a good place for sea and land birdwatching. Among rarer bird species observed are Isabelline shrike, crested lark, horned grebe, desert wheatear, and black-legged kittiwake.

  2. The forest areas of Jūrmalciems are characterized by dune relief with old pine stands and wetter depressions where black alder and aspen grow. During the breeding season, stock dove, red-breasted flycatcher, black woodpecker, and greenish warbler have been observed.

  3. The southern part of Jūrmalciems features farmsteads and dry grasslands. During migration, there is a great variety of passerine birds – wagtails, pipits, shrikes, warblers, buntings. In winter, the area is inhabited by rough-legged buzzard and great grey shrike. In summer – linnet, common whitethroat, woodlark, whinchat, and hoopoe.
