The Bāte–Vaiņode Church was originally located outside the present-day centre of Vaiņode Parish, near Vecbāte. It was built of stone and masonry but was destroyed during the Second World War. Today, only ruins remain at the original site.
At a time when Latvia was experiencing widespread persecution of religion and the closure of churches, the Bāte–Vaiņode congregation, led by pastor Jānis Geide together with long-time parish chairman Jānis Puļķis, began the construction of a new Lutheran church on what is now Brīvības Street. In 1956, the Vaiņode congregation celebrated a significant milestone with the consecration of the newly built church. In 1994, a bell tower was added.
The bell from the former Bāte–Vaiņode Church can be seen in the churchyard.
