Orchid trail

In the "Pape" nature park, along with bulls and wild horses, visitors to the park can also see the magnificent species of wild orchids. The species of orchids found in Latvia are rare, or even very rare, therefore all the species of wild orchids that can be seen in the nature park "Pape" are recorded in the Latvian Red Book.

The return of the orchids.

In the 1990s, there were no wild orchid species in the Pape nature park, but since 1999, when the first 18 wild horses were brought from the Netherlands, a new orchid species can be found almost every year. It is the importance of wild herbivores in the spread of orchids that is decisive!

When grazing was started, after only a few years, in places where the animals had eaten the grass until mid-June, for example, cuckoos began to grow. Currently, the number of orchid deposits is increasing every year. Meadows have become more blooming and diverse. The spotted cuckoo and the erect-leaved cuckoo breed the fastest and best here, but in recent years the green-flowered nightshade can also be found more and more often.
