In 1560, the first church in the town was located near Grobiņa Castle and was built of wood. Due to its poor condition, it was demolished, and in 1596, a new wooden church was constructed opposite Grobiņa's medieval castle with bastions. Unfortunately, during the Swedish invasion in 1659, the church was either burned down or deliberately set on fire. The fire destroyed the entire church interior, including the ornate altar. During the reign of Duke Jacob, in 1660, when the duke resided in Grobiņa's medieval castle with bastions, the construction of a new masonry church began. The church was consecrated in 1664 and underwent another renovation in 1892.
